Public elementary teachers in Peel to hold strike vote
Teachers in Peel are prepared to defend public education
The union representing public elementary teachers in Peel is preparing to hold a strike vote on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2019 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the CAA Centre in Brampton, located at 7575 Kennedy Road South.
“Elementary teachers in Peel are passionate about the work they do with students every single day, and about the important role that a strong, publicly funded education system plays in our society,” says Gail Bannister-Clarke, President of the Peel Elementary Teachers’ Local of ETFO. “On October 23, our members will come together in large numbers to hear about the progress being made at the provincial bargaining table and they will vote on the question of supporting strike action, if necessary.”
Collective agreements for all ETFO members across the province expired on August 31, 2019. “To date, the Progressive Conservative government has attacked public education, students and their families, and education workers by slashing budgets that have long been inadequate, taking caring teachers and adults out of schools by cutting hundreds of positions, and otherwise throwing education in Ontario into a state of unnecessary chaos and uncertainty,” notes Bannister-Clarke.
ETFO members in Peel are ready to do whatever it takes to defend their students, their students’ families, their profession – indeed, the whole system of public education in Ontario. “On October 23, we will gather together to raise our collective voice against the regressive and irresponsible actions of this provincial government, and we will make it clear that if Doug Ford insists on attacking our students and communities, he will need to contend with the power and passion of teachers in Peel,” says Bannister-Clarke.
