National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women

December 6 is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. A commemorative plaque stands as a permanent fixture on the grounds of Montreal's École Polytechnique, on which is engraved the date December 6, 1989 and the names of 14 women who each carried with them the goal of pursuing engineering degrees.

December 6th was declared by the Parliament of Canada as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in 1991.

The day of observance was officially declared to remember and honour the memories of the Montreal massacre victims. It also acknowledges the approximately 3,400 other women in Canada whose names currently form part of a national femicide list - including at least 1,200 Indigenous women whose murders or disappearance are the subject of the ongoing National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

On December 5, ETFO Provincial Executive unanimously passed a motion condemning the proposed 20% increase to the Ontario College of Teachers member fee.

Later in the day a letter was sent to the Governing Councillors informing them of this decision and calling on them to vote against the fee increase.

The OTF President is scheduled to make a deputation regarding this issue to the Governing Council at 9:15 a.m.

Members of the ETFO Provincial Executive, along with local leaders, will be gathering outside the OCT building from 8 - 9 a.m. on the 7th to send a strong message to the members of the Governing Council regarding this unfounded fee increase.

Renewed Math Strategy

 Stylized _survey_ with mouse

The Ministry of Education is currently reviewing the Renewed Math Strategy (RMS). ETFO is a part of the RMS work group which is assisting with the review.

The work group feels it is critical to gather data from frontline educators to understand their experience of the implementation the RMS since September 2016. This will assist the Ministry in making modifications to the Strategy in years two and three.

ETFO and the other affiliates have provided feedback to the Ministry on the survey, which will be anonymous. Members are encouraged to share their experience of the RMS implementation by completing this online survey.
